How I've helped OZ: installed this wiki and help maintain it. Also, a very long time ago I submitted a patch to fix the Opie Pacman game.  :)

GPE Thoughts

Opie is a far more polished environment. That said, I like GPE better. GPE feels somewhat like it's more a part of my desktop while Opie feels to me more like a one-off hack. I expect that GPE will see more development in the future.

  • I've seen a tiny analog clock in GPE screenshots. Where can I obtain this? The regular clock takes up too much valuable taskbar real estate and problems with changing width and when the screen rotates/resizes. This clock solves everything in one blow.

Some issues:

  • Why does a tap-longtap scroll a scroll bar to the extreme end? This makes it damned hard to scroll line-by-line. It's lika tap-tap-tap tap-damn where was I? Its painful. If I want to go to the bottom, I'll just drag the scroll bar thumb thank you very much. (this awful behavior smells intentional because it seems like the device would have to go out of its way to do this...)
  • It's really strange that there's no active task switcher. I would expect a submenu in the Start menu or a task menu applet. Or both. Instead, you can sometimes click on the window's title bar. How am I supposed to discover that??
  • Window titlebars take up a lot of room and really don't offer much functionality that I can tell. The panel, on the other hand, is always overflowing with icons. How about allowing us to place applets on the outsides of the window title bar?
  • interactive-help: useless, hopeless, a waste of space!
    • useless: couldn't find anything that actually offered help
    • hopeless: there is no way you're going to add help for everything that the user can click on. It's much better
    • waste of space: the panel on a portrait Z doesn't have much room for icons. And certainly it has no room for an icon this useless.
    • What's worse than not having a help button? Having a help button that is totally and utterly unhelpful.
  • gpe-aerial:
    • Should take over the function of the wireless monitor.
    • Should display your current settings when you click on it
    • Shoulw have an "associate with other networks" button that would bring up the network switcher.
  • Panel doesn't handle rotation very well. Especially the alarm clock changing its size. Panel Manager should allow you to add and remove panel apps too.
Remove: just add an X right below the ^ and v arrows.
Add: make another list of the apps available to add.
  • Should add a battery graph to the CPU/mem monitor. Ideally, whould make configurable which bars are shown in the panel. Then the window that comes up would show all the bars, with labels.
    • network bandwidth
    • Disk space
    • temperature?
  • Package Manager
    • Should show progress monitor in dialog on startup.
    • Should quit entirely if startup window is closed. As it is, it looks like it should work... but quits the minute you click on something.
    • Should display a description of the pack
