Talk:HowTos/OPIE and GPE

From OpenZaurus

There are some apm issues with running opie & gpe at the same time:

  • If you don't log into gpe, after a while, your opie screen will blank out
  • Also, you'll find that if the sleep settings in gpe are different to opie, your clamshell might suddenly suspend.

I solved this by disabling the apm settings in gpe completely, and giving opie control of them. In fact, I tend not to have my screen dimming in opie either, as I don't like the screen automatically dimming on me, so I can't fully say whether or not my disabling gpe's sleep settings has solved the problem, or whether not having any apm settings in opie has solved the issue.

  • There is a cpu & memory overhead in running both wm's at the same time. I've frozen my 3200 a few times by having gnumeric, abiword, gimp (on gpe) & zbedic's wikipedia & a few fast-load apps running under opie...but then, that is perhaps an excessive load to put on a pda.

To decrease the risk of runnin out of memory, I created a 256mb swap partition on the 2 gig sd card that I have permanently mounted. I've also subdivided the microdrive to allow me to have another 256mb swap partition, so altogether there is now a total of 512mb of swap space, which is way more than adequate.
