About
The Collie was the first Zaurus to be sold as a consumer device. The Collie family consists of two models, the SL-5000D, announced in late 2001, and the SL-5500, announced in mid-2002. Because of its limited memory, the SL-5000D was intended to be used mostly by developers to prepare software for the soon-to-be released SL-5500. The D stood for "developer".
The SL-5500G is version of the SL-5500 targeted for the German market. The only differences between the 5500 and the 5500G are the graphical markings on the unit:
- The Z and Y keys are transposed (the German device has a QWERTZ keyboard).
- Right Shift is AltGr.
Collie runs the Linux 2.4 kernel.
The Poodle appears similar to the Collie but it has a different CPU and memory configuration. The Tosa is a significantly upgraded device, with a larger screen, more memory, and built-in 802.11.
Installation
To install OpenZaurus on your Collie: Collie/Install
Diagnostics Screen
On a Collie it is possible to enter the diagnostics system. The process is similar to flashing a new ROM.
- Power off and open the battery cover
- hold G and D (you can also try D and P)
- press reset with stylus
The diag screen will help you test every aspect of the zaurus hardware including if your CF slot is working or not.
'WARNING' : some tests will destroy your current data in RAM (e.g. RAM test). Backup your data before playing with diagnostics ! Also notice that using the diagnostics screen produces key clicks and some tests produce noise. Don't play diagnostics in a quiet library. ;-)
To exit:
- Navigate to screen 3/4 (using left/right buttons) (it is 3/3 on my SL-5500)
- Select "Clear Diagnostic Flag" and press "Ok"
- Reset the device by pressing the full reset button at the back of the unit.
Backup Battery
The Collie contains a backup battery to preserve RAM when the main battery is replaced. [1]
