Poodle/Install
From OpenZaurus
This describes how to install OpenZaurus on the Poodle.
Reflashing the zaurus results in complete loss of data. So backup first.
The steps to flash the zaurus 5600 are:
- Make sure the AC power jack is connected.
- Download the files: zImage.bin, initrd.bin, updater.sh. If the filenames are different, change them to the above or else the zaurus will not be able to find them. The filenames are case sensitive. Note the capital I in zImage.bin, especially if copying to a vfat-formatted card.
- Put files in the root directory of your CF card /mnt/cf (The flasher program asks you if you want to use CF or SD, so it is also possible to use an SD card).
- Turn the zaurus over and flip the battery case switch to "Replace Battery". Remove the battery cover but don’t remove the battery
- Push the reset button on the lower right of the battery compartment with your stylus
- Replace the battery cover and switch to "Normal Operation". This step is not optional. The Zaurus seems to have some sort of interlock that tests if the battery compartment is open or the switch is in "Replace Battery" mode.
- Flip the zaurus over and press the "OK" button and hold, while still pressing the "OK" button press the "Cancel" and hold until the Sharp Menu displays.
- The Maintenance Screen will display. Choose "Update".
- Do the update, choosing SD or CF depending on where the files are.
- After the update, it will say "please reset". Turn the zaurus off. flip it over again and switch to "Replace Battery"
- Open the battery compartment, dont remove the battery. Press the reset switch.
- Close the battery compartment, switch to "Normal Operation"
- The Zaurus will now reboot to your new Operating System
Choosing a zImage
Download either zImage.bin-pxa250 or zImage.bin-pxa255, depending on whether you have a PXA250 or PXA255 CPU.
To check which CPU your poodle has do cat /proc/cpuinfo in terminal.
Choosing an initrd.bin
Download either the opie-image, gpe-image or the bootstrap-image jffs file, and rename it to “initrd.bin”. Use the zImage as explained above.
opie-image contains the QT/Embedded based graphical system, gpe-image contains GNOME Palmtop Edition (http://gpe.handhelds.org), the bootstrap-image file is more for basing distributions upon and contains no graphical system.
