Editing Pages
Editing Help shows some of the markup you can use. You can experiment in Sandbox.
Monitoring Pages
An RSS feed reader is the best tool to use to monitor the entire site for changes. Simply subscribe to this url.
MediaWiki can email you whenever a page changes. Just create an account, confirm your email address, and set up your watchlist preferences. Your watchlist can include any page you have edited or just the pages you specify.
Controlling Spam
The wiki currently allows unregistered users to edit the site in order to encourage more people to contribute content. If spam becomes a problem we will be forced to make the site more restrictive. As of 17 June 2005 this wiki has been up for 2 months and, except for some prescription drug spam links added in the first few weeks, we haven't had any spam trouble whatsoever. Knock wood!
When spammers hit the site, their changes are very easily reverted:
- View the page's history
- Click on the date of the page you'd like to revert to. This opens that revision in an edit window.
- Ignore the warning about an out of date copy and save the page. The spam has been eradicated.
Discussion
Simply type your comment and append ~~~~ to insert your name and the date (make sure you're logged in, of course). There is no need to move one or two insightful comments to the discussion page. However, once a discussion starts to distract from the content on a page, it needs to be moved to the discussion page. Put a tiny summary and a link to the discussion page on the main page so that people know to look there for more information.
Rants are fine, but they need to be confined to discussion pages or personal pages.
When you create an account, you are assigned a personal page. Use this page to express your opinion, findings, whatever. If it's not too offensive, add a link to the Users page so that others can find it.
